The visual language established in Sam Stevens’ work presents the audience with critical yet often poetic forms in film, video and still imagery. Recurrent themes are the representation of political and social realities and the visual codes of landscape, borders, migration, and public space.
His work, which has been described as 'both political document and rigorously elegant personal expression', has produced studies on a diverse range of subjects such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bialowieza Forest, hunger strike protests in Barcelona and a bridge across the Gibraltar Straits. Stevens’ work has been commissioned and supported by established arts organisations such as The Arts Council England, Film London and the Leverhulme Trust and has been exhibited and screened extensively in galleries and film festivals internationally such as the Istanbul Biennial and the Whitechapel Gallery London. |
